At what age can students access the college?
Although the entry age for a student to access the college is 16 years old, we do strongly advise parents and carers to start looking for appropriate provision several months earlier. The process for assessment and funding approval is quite lengthy.
Who pays for placements?
Placements are funded mainly by the referring Borough, although some students choose to use a portion of their Direct Payments for sessional attendance.
Is there any residential provision?
Yes. We have a residential home, The Old Vicarage. This is also situated in Uxbridge and is a 10 minute walk from the college. Most students are able to self travel after some travel training. If self travel is not possible, students can be escorted either on foot or by car.
How can I make a referral?
Referrals can be made via the application form which is down loadable from this site. We would recommend however, that you visit the college in the first instance to discuss specific needs. The funding authority (usually the Borough in which you live), will need to be involved as the case will need to be presented at a funding panel for approval.
Can students access academic courses?
Yes absolutely. We currently have students accessing University degree courses and others GCSE’s. The route taken to achieve academic qualifications depends on the individual and what is likely to be the most successful outcome based on their situation. For example, some students are happy to access a main stream college with some support. For others this environment would be far too overwhelming and a distance learning or correspondence course would be a more comfortable and likely way of them succeeding in achieving a qualification.
How many days a year is the college open?
The college is open for up to 220 days per year for students. We have an additional 2 weeks where we are open for staff training and development. Each January a college calendar is distributed.
Is there any therapeutic input?
Yes. Students have a weekly session with a Guidance Counsellor and the opportunity for an additional session with a Psychotherapist. This is particularly useful where it has been identified that Cognitive Behaviour Therapy would be of benefit.
How many students can the college accommodate?
The current college capacity is for 15 full time students.
Is there an opportunity to visit the college prior to an application?
This is an essential and welcome part of the assessment process. It is important that you and the potential student feel their needs can be fully met here at West London Community College. We just ask that you either call or e-mail prior to visiting and we will ensure someone is available to meet with you and answer any questions you have.
Can I pay for a placement independently?
Yes. Although traditionally day placements are funded by your Local Authority, we are seeing an increase in students choosing to fund a placement with their Direct Payments.
